At the dawn of the new millennium, two small hotels have been opened in the Marquesas. Keikahanui Nuku Hiva Pearl Lodge is located on the island of Nuku Hiva and Hanakee Hiva Oa Pearl Cottages hotel is on the island of Hiva Oa. Both hotels have been designed to welcome and accommodate travelers who are searching for an authentic experience.
The Nuku Hiva Pearl Lodge overlooks the bay and village of Taiohae and the black sandy beach lying 50 steps below. Each bungalow is built with local materials and decorated by a different artist from the area.
The Hiva Oa Pearl Cottages are situated on the side of a hill, and offers stunning views of the bay of Tahauku, the bay of the Traitors, the Bordelais canal, the small islet of Hanakee, and in the distance, the island of Tahuata. Facing the hotel is the majestic Mount Temetiu. From the restaurant and the bar, guests have a spectacular 200 degree panoramic view.
Travelers are welcomed on arrival by the marvelous melody of Mave Mai, a traditional Marquesean folk song. The staff of the hotel do everything they can to enable to slip into the Marquesean rhythm of life, with its simple, yet profound values. After breakfast, you can take a relaxing walk through the forest, stopping at the home of the guide's grandfather. Here you will be invited to visit grandfather's 'faapu' (vegetable garden), and if you are lucky, he will recount some family legends. You might also make a stop at a cousin's place, a famous sculptor of the island or at another cousin's home, who is a tattoo artist. The tattooist can explain his designs and may even tempt you to come back later to try one out.
Take a jeep safari to discover archeological sites steeped in ancient culture, horse back ride, bicycle, hike or simply walk through awe-inspiring landscapes or scuba dive next to a hammerhead shark and manta rays.
